Catalytic Converter Blockage Test

In our current series of tests, we have investigated how fuel quality affects the performance of the catalytic converter. The results clearly show that using excessively moist firewood (wood moisture > 35%) combined with low combustion temperatures can impair the function of the catalytic converter. Incomplete oxidation occurs, especially during the heating phase or when combustion is mainly smoldering, which can lead to unburned residues depositing in the catalytic converter. This buildup can reduce airflow and catalytic efficiency.

However, our investigations also demonstrate that the catalytic converter can regenerate under optimal operating conditions. When dry, well-seasoned wood (residual moisture < 20%) is burned at sufficiently high temperatures, the deposits burn off, allowing the catalytic converter to regain its full functionality.

Therefore, we strongly recommend using dry firewood (residual moisture < 20%) to ensure that the catalytic converter effectively reduces emissions over the long term and to guarantee trouble-free operation of your fireplace.
